Sample Newegg.com Ad for Cyber Monday

As part of an assignment, I created an sample ad for newegg.com for Cyber Monday. This ad was designed to persuade consumers looking for deals on electronics to forego Black Friday shopping, and instead shop online on Cyber Monday. Without directly naming competitors, this ad is making fun of the long lines, and even tents, that show up outside of big box retailers before Black Friday.

In recent years, brick and mortar stores are starting Black Friday earlier than ever, with some beginning their sales on Thanksgiving Day. There has been some backlash, especially on social media, against these businesses. This ad makes subtle reference to that backlash, suggesting that Thanksgiving shouldn't be for shopping.

Yamaha sample ads for VALS types

For one of my classes Fall 2015, I made sample ads for Yamaha boats. These ads were designed to appeal to one of the VALS types. The VALS types categorize consumers based on their primary motivation and resources. I created a "Strivers" ad and an "Experiencers" ad.

Strivers Ad

Strivers are concerned with gaining the approval of others. They care about status and achievement. The focus of this ad is to stress that owning a Yamaha boat is a sign of success. The Yamaha owner has worked hard to achieve success, and can demonstrate his level of success when others see his Yamaha boat.

Tagline: You’ve Earned It
The tagline implies that the consumer has earned both the financial ability to afford a Yamaha boat and the approval of others.

Ad appealing to Experiencers

Experiencers Ad

Experiencers seek excitement and novelty. They would rather spend money on an experience than an object. The key to attracting them is demonstrating the fun times that will be had when they buy a Yamaha boat. This ad showcases the fun of the experience of owning a boat over physical characteristics of the boat.

Tagline: Adventure Awaits

The tagline tells consumers that there is a new world of adventures, just waiting to be discovered when they buy a Yamaha boat.

Rochester Academy of Music and Dance

This is a logo I designed for a music academy in Rochester, MN. According to the client, Rochester is well-known for its geese, and they wanted to incorporate a goose into their logo. 

I kept the logo clean and bold, so it would reproduce well in flyers, business cards, and so on. A small business needs to watch its bottom line carefully, so I gave them something that would still look good even on an inexpensive, black and white photocopy.

I also created an alternate logo for them, below. This one is a little more playful. I designed it close to square, for use as a Facebook page logo, or for other online use.

This wedding shower invitation let me branch out from the style of work I typically do in a day. I love the damask patterned background, and the rich wine red (one of the couple's wedding colors).

The names and personal information have been changed.  

Hopalicious Gum Pack

I was asked to do this design as a branding concept for Hopalicious, a beer made by Ale Asylum.
My boss had this design put onto a t-shirt. The idea was that bartenders could wear it to generate interest in the beer.

A fantastically popular brewery out of Madison just made its way up to the Fox Valley. I designed a half-page ad that went into one of the local, free "nightlife" magazines.

It was challenging and fun to create this design. I tried to capture the brewery's darker persona.
The best part was when I heard how much the brewmaster loved my work.

Mustache Bash

This one is a little old, but I had so much fun doing it that I had to include it. Searching for interesting mustache images was a blast! One of those 'staches is famous, can you tell which one?

Michelle's Cake - Design Only

This is the design for Michelle's birthday cake. We took this to the bakery where they will scan it like they do with photo cakes. I'm really hoping that this works out well, and that the colors turn out!

First Birthday Invite - word cloud

This is the front of the invitation to my daughter's first birthday party. It was such a nice change of pace to use feminine colors and fonts. Chick (the font with the flowers) is currently one of the novelty fonts I'm most amused by. I've also designed her cake in this style (to be printed at the bakery) and a matching banner. Pictures of those will follow!

MGD64

I was asked to come up with a poster to promote Miller Genuine Draft 64 at a bar. Since this is a low-calorie beer, I wanted to portray the message that drinking MGD64 would help you be thin.

I asked both men and women who they thought the target of this ad was. The interesting thing was the men thought it was directed at men, and the women thought it was directed at women. The women thought it gave the message of "drink MGD64 to have this kind of body." The men thought that it gave the message of "drink MGD64, get a sexy girl."

Collage Layout

This is a collage layout I did for a graduation party.
I've blacked out all of the images, since they weren't mine.

I used a corkboard image for the background, and created a thumbtack to "pin" the images up. I put a white stroke around all of the images, to give the look of some lab prints.

The most fun was deciding how the pins would go if I were making this board in real life.

This one is rather simple, but I really like the way it turned out. I enjoy seeing the signs in the market!

There's an music event coming up in Oshkosh. Miller Lite doesn't have sponsorship, so this is what we did without using the name.

Welcome to the Ziemer Designs blog.
This is the new home for all of my portfolio work.
I'm a graphic designer and photographer. I currently make signs for bars and convenience stores, so I'll put putting up several samples of those. But I'll also be putting up some photos I'm particularly proud of, as well as some designs I've done on the side.
